Antigone
At the first time that we were asked to read the play Antigone, I think I do not really understand the language of the play. Luckily, we have watched the theatre of the play Anike. So, I tend to get some idea of what Antigone is all about as it is in fact merely the same as Anike and as a matter of fact, Anike is just another Malaysian version of Antigone. I was lucky too as Dr Edwin helped a lot in understanding the play. Well, there is also religious part included in the play which is obviously I do not understand and have no knowledge at all of stuffs like Tiresias.
As we read and learn the play, I get to know the characters and the theme of the play better. In this play, the main character, Antigone is going against the rule of Creon by giving her brother a proper burial. She has a sister whom is different from her as Ismene is so obedient and act like any other woman at that time besides being a rationale to the situation contrast to Antigone. However, we get to see that both do love and care about each other. Antigone falls from a princess title to a traitor of the law. We then can see the weakness in the character traits of Creon although he actually presents a powerful king. I said that he is weak because he could not bear with Antigone that is just doing the right thing for her brother. Creon is seen as a person that takes law and justice to safe his status. Well, how could a girl be so brave and betray a king’s law? Again, the atmosphere of woman being dominated is clear in the play. We can see that it is obvious if we analysed the play especially Ismene’s lines.
Honestly, to me, Antigone is quite a boring play because it is so serious since it is mainly about again, serious problems and theme where there are many people died in the play besides the tragic part of it. I was so glad and relief that we have finished doing this play.

i almost forgotten that the play Anike that watched earlier has so much to do with Antigone. Yes, just like you said, Anike is actually a Malaysian version of Antigone. i was kind of drawn into this play that i hope the presentation of it would be so great. maybe you have the same expectation with me so we think that the play Anike was so frustating and dissapointing. maybe we need to take into consideration that the actors for Anike is amateur, which explains many weaknesses found in the play.

I am totally agreed with you that the play ‘Anike’ by Wong Pui Nam really helps in understanding ‘Antigone’. The plot is quite similar. Besides, the Asian version of ‘Anike’ seems to be more simple and easier to understand. May be because the culture emerged in this play is more familiar to be compared with the ‘Antigone’. Furthermore, in term of language, I think the language used in ‘Anike’ is simpler than ‘Antigone’. And this makes me remembered on what we have learnt in Dr. Fauziah’s lecture before. There is a research done on the students’ ability in comprehending the reading text. One of the strategies that can be used in helping students understand what they have read is by finding a text which is familiar to our students’ prior knowledge. Thus, as we have read and watched ‘Anike’ before, we may definitely have prior information and general idea about what is ‘Antigone’ all about. Wow, at last, I have something that can be considered as meaningful learning. Hihi…
Besides, I also love the way Sophocles portrayed Antigone and Ismene’s character. For me, Sophocles is such a critical writer. He was trying to introduce the stereotype and typical perspective towards the roles of women from the eyes of the society in that century. Here, we can see the two different types of characters traits between these two characters. Basically, there are the same in term of blood, upbringing and values. However, they share different perspective towards the idea of women roles in society. Antigone is brave and determined, but Ismene is a symbol of typical women.
Actually, this play is quite interesting. But, I cannot blame you if you think it is boring as I know the fact that not many can stand learned for the same time twice. Never mind. Enjoy your release from this extremely interesting play. What say you? It is such a brilliant idea, right?
I do not agree with you.I do not think creon is weak.Antigone did the right thing to bury her brother but in doing so, her crime was punishable by death. If I were Creon, I would do the same thing. Creon was being fair to the other brother because he was loyal to the King unlike the other one.
I do not think the play is 'boring'. I assume you must have not finished reading the whole play. is that true?
